SPECIAL NOTE: 1977 Vuelta a Espana Champion Freddy Maertens scored 7 stage wins in the Giro d’Italia. The Vuelta held April 26 to May 15 saw Maertens gain 13 stage wins on his way to the Vuelta crown.
SPECIAL NOTE: With 7 stage wins Maertens was well on his way to winning the Maglia Ciclamino (Points Jersey) when he and fellow Belgian sprinter tangled of the stage 8b Mugello Race Track finish and crashed 100 meters from the line. Injuries caused both to abandon the Giro.
